Briefing Paper – VCS Role in Preventing Unplanned Hospital Admissions

NHS Rotherham has asked the voluntary and community sector (VCS), co-ordinated by Voluntary Action Rotherham (VAR), to come up with a proposal that will help to reduce the high level of unplanned hospital admissions in Rotherham. The proposal will need demonstrate how VCS services can support the NHS to prevent people attending hospital on an unplanned basis.

NHS Rotherham has been very clear that it is not looking at public health type initiatives that seek to address the causes of ill health such as obesity, smoking and lack of exercise.   It is looking for activities that will have a direct impact in the short to medium term on reducing unplanned attendance at A&E and urgent hospital admissions – please read the attached briefing paper for further information and ideas of the type of interventions the VCS could offer.

Voluntary Action Rotherham has been asked to collate ideas from VCS organisations setting out how they could contribute to the NHSR objective and co-ordinate these into (preferably) one cohesive proposal.  VAR will need to submit the proposal (s) to NHS Rotherham by the beginning of February 2012.
